The calm of matte, with the depth of plaster
Roman clay sits between a limewash and a polished plaster. It has more body and evenness than a brushed limewash, yet none of the glassy sheen of Venetian plaster or marmorino — it stays dead matte, like suede or unglazed clay. Trowelled on by hand in two thin coats, it carries a soft, cloudy movement that reads as calm on a big wall and, up close, as unmistakably hand-made. It is a mineral finish: lime- and clay-based, breathable, and tinted through the body so the colour lives in the material.

Our Process
Sample & colour
We make a hand-trowelled sample in your own light and colour before the wall is started.
Prepare the wall
We fill, skim and prime the substrate, because a matte finish shows what is under it.
Trowel two coats
Thin coats are trowelled on by hand, building the soft, cloudy matte depth.
Protect where needed
In hallways and busier rooms we add a matte, breathable sealer that keeps the look.
Installing in South Florida
Roman clay is a breathable, mineral finish, so it lets a wall release moisture instead of trapping it behind a film — which is why it suits the older lime-plastered and masonry walls found across Coral Gables and the Grove, and lives easily in Miami's humidity. It belongs on dry interior walls; where a room sees more hands or the odd splash, we add a matte sealer so the surface stays wipeable without going shiny.
